Urbanism

In the years after 1995, the town of Reading was transformed by a series of major projects, beginning with the construction of the Madejski Stadium and including the Oracle Centre; the pedestrianisation of the town centre; the new sewage works; and Reading Southside (Kennet Island).

The vision behind this redevelopment was laid out in a document entitled Reading City 2020, and, as Councillor David Sutton, Leader of Reading Borough Council, several essays, publicity documents and speeches were produced on the new urbanism.

Presentations at the Reading Conference and at the Urban Summit in Birmingham, 2002, were important stages in this work, which led to invitations to attend and speak at Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan and at the Marché International des Professionels de l’Immobilier (MIPIM) in Cannes.
